About the Dish:

NO, you can’t taste the liver!

I drink these smoothies 3-4x a week while pregnant and I swear every time I do, I feel great. I have a surge of energy! Liver is SO important in general but especially during pregnancy. Some even believe liver is a good replacement for a prenatal as long as you have a whole food healthy diet and no other health conditions to consider.

Liver supplements can be very expensive so I prefer to get liver from my farmer (usually when I buy 1/2 cow so its included). I slice my raw liver into .5oz pieces and freeze it. This makes it easy to throw into my smoothies!

You can certainly add more liver and drink them less. I find that .5oz is barely detectable in the smoothie, making the smoothie very satisfying. I don’t love the taste of liver and my acid reflux doesn’t love swallowing several liver capsules so this was perfect for me!

When I first started this, I added a little cocoa powder as well to really hide any taste, but then I realized I didn’t need to!

This is the smoothie in a 32oz mason jar

This is before my third trimester when I would add a splash of maple syrup instead of the dates

Raw Milk

Raw milk is unpasteurized milk, or milk in its pure form, straight from the animal.

Pasteurization is when the milk is heated at a high temp for long enough to kill bacteria and allow for a longer shelf life.

In 1973 the government required all milk sold across state lines needed to be pasteurized due to safety concerns of foodborne illnesses. To this day many states do not allow the sale of raw milk.

Although this may seem safer, pasteurization also kills good bacteria, enzymes, and nutrients that work symbiotically to allow our bodies to properly digest milk, as well as provide many health benefits.

Some health benefits that raw milk can provide are reducing environmental allergies, strengthening your immune system, improving digestive health, increasing bone density, and overall having a healthy gut.

It is a personal decision to drink raw milk. I choose to because I think the benefits far outweigh the risk of food poisoning. There are much riskier foods to get foodborne illnesses from and as long as you are buying from a trusted farmer, I wouldn’t worry.

Equipment:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup frozen blueberries

  • 2 medjool dates (remove pits)

(optional-although I would highly recommend some sweetener like maple syrup or honey)

  • .5oz raw liver cube (frozen)

  • 2 raw egg yolks (optional)

  • 2 cups of raw milk

  • 1 Tbsp. cocoa powder (optional)

    Steps:

  1. Add all ingredients to your blender (I prefer to go in order of how I have the ingredients listed just because it blends better)

  2. I usually let the ingredients sit in the blender for 5 minutes before blending just so it softens the liver and dates a bit.

  3. Blend on high for 1-2 minutes, stopping and stirring when/if necessary.

  4. Pour into a cup and enjoy!

Some little chunks of dates will be present, but they make it even more delicious in my opinion!

Changes/Substitutions

This smoothie has a pregnant/breastfeeding woman in mind.

Raw liver has almost all of the essential nutrients that you and your baby need. There is no food higher in nutrients.

Egg yolks are another superfood that contains multiple nutrients you and your baby need.

Dates may be beneficial in your third trimester to help increased dilation and shorter labor with less chance of dilation!

So please do with this smoothie what you wish. Liver and egg yolks are still very beneficial if not pregnant but you may add whichever sweetener you want, use pasteurized milk, add a different fruit, go for it!
